Following successful careers within the property industry, working for some of the large corporate agents in south London, Peter Burchell and James Power recognised a gap in the market for an independent estate agent that not only had unrivalled knowledge of the local areas and property market but could also offer a more personal service to their clients. In 1998, Peter and James opened their first branch at Blackheath Standard. Their ethos proved so successful, both with local house sellers and buyers and with landlords and tenants, that a second branch was opened in Lee in 1999 and another in New Cross in 2000. Peter James opened their most recent office in Brockley in 2017.
Since the launch of our first office, other divisions have opened, including our Property Management department where we currently manage hundreds of properties throughout south London. Our Land and New Homes department operates from our head office in Sidcup and is run by an experienced team who are RICS trained and ready to offer advice about anything related to property, again offering a bespoke service to our many clients in this sometimes complex area of estate agency. When you register with one of our letting consultants, you will have one point of contact who will get to know you and assess your needs and wants. From this they will hunt for the best properties suiting your requirements across our branch network. Whether that be in Woolwich or Surrey Quays, Forest Hill or Charlton, Greenwich or Hither Green, your consultant will take you there at a date and time to suit you. We suggest you see properties as soon as you can as the rental market is very fast; but don’t worry, your letting consultant will keep you up-to-date with new properties as they hit the market.

Our Property Management service is aimed at landlords who want a complete 'hands off' approach when letting their property, giving them peace of mind in the knowledge that their property is in the best possible hands. Our team of Property Managers have extensive experience and knowledge in this field. Along with all the services listed in the service above, Peter James will:
- visit the property a minimum of every 14 weeks, this is a walk-through inspection to ensure that your tenant is looking after the property in general terms
- after each visit, report any findings back to you, addressing any issues arising during our inspection, if there are no issues noted we will still advise you that the inspection has taken place, giving you peace of mind in the knowledge that all is well
- following your instructions, settle ground rent, service charges, insurance premiums and any other outgoings arising, deducting this from your net rental income
- organise maintenance and repair of the property as authorised by the landlord

Peter James’ Land & New Homes department offers a number of services to clients. These include providing consultancy services and marketing advice for developers, from initial site acquisition through to completion of sales. We make full use of the superb locations of our offices in Brockley, Blackheath, Lee and New Cross to promote our clients’ developments across south-east London and beyond. Our research has shown that over 80% of people buying properties start the process by viewing properties online; therefore, in addition to our excellent branch network, we use all of the major property portals such as Rightmove and Zoopla to reach a national audience.
Unlike other agents, we offer bespoke marketing strategies to our clients. Also, the marketing of schemes is personally overseen by one of the owners of the company and head of the Land and New Homes department, Jim Power.
Finally, the department has access to an extensive database of investors who are contacted on a regular basis with details of new property developments and land that Peter James has been instructed to sell. We have great success in disposing of our clients properties in this way.
